Only a few weeks ago, R U BUSY? graduate Dylan Cameron faced many personal challenges that could have seen his career aspirations go spiralling down the drain, but a change of perspective has seen Dylan aim for a future in automotives.
Dylan took part in BUSY At Work’s eight-week pre-employment course for young people whilst living in crisis accommodation, graduating from the course in March.
His bad habits started to catch up with him once he moved out of crisis accommodation and in with other young people, but after completing his course it made him realise the negative situation he had found himself in.
Dylan said going to BUSY At Work helped him figure out where he needed to go.
“I realised I wanted to be a mechanic, working with cars, and the automotive side of work.”
He adds that going to R U BUSY? also helped him to learn how to write up a resume and cover letter – and learn about himself as a person.
“Since I’ve been at BUSY and completed the Cert 2 in Self Awareness, I can move forward with my life and let go of the past.”
BUSY At Work Youth Project Officer Rebecca Slavin-Molloy said that it was “awesome” that he made these life changes to better himself.
“It’s something that they kind of don’t really understand at the start of the course, but then once the eight weeks are done, they start to realise themselves and that’s the best thing about the course,” Rebecca said.
“They start to recognise the signs themselves and make changes with guidance through me.”
Rebecca says she was amazed when Dylan returned a few weeks later to tell her about his situation of falling back into old habits and how he didn’t want to be in that environment anymore.
“He said that coming into the R U BUSY? program and having that extra support had made him realise that he needed to change the way he was doing things, because he said he was just spiralling down and having all these negative people in his life,” Rebecca said.
Dylan has set his sights on the future of his mechanic career and is set to begin a pre-vocational course for automotive in July.
