Queensland contractors can expect to see a heightened level of activity in the field over the coming months, as millions of dollars worth of road construction works kicks off in the state’s south-east.
Announcing the package of works yesterday (March 18), transport and main roads minister Scott Emerson said asset management contracts valued at up to $450 million will be released over the coming months.
Mr Emerson said the industry boost – which may generate opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland – is a result of ongoing reforms to RoadTek.
“Previously work on major arterials in south-east Queensland was delivered under three separate streams – routine, programmed and rehabilitation,” the minister commented.
“By combining this work and delivering it in an integrated fashion we expect to see better outcomes for Queensland roads and motorists across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast regions.”
The transport department will begin the procurement process for long-term contracts this week, with companies and contractors registering their interest for either the three or five-year contracts over the coming months.
Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that since 1999, road and transport infrastructure delivered in Queensland has increased 79 per cent – ten per cent more than recorded nationally.
