The Queensland communities of Palm Island and Wellesley are set to benefit from a $4.6 million federal government investment in the Community Development Fund, which will go towards projects supporting Indigenous employment and community development in remote areas.
Coalgaree Aboriginal Corporation in Palm Island is one of sixteen organisations across Australia receiving a share of the $4.6 million funding. This money has been put toward supporting the Coalgaree Infrastructure and General Maintenance Unit to provide opportunities for trade construction and build local business skills.
The funding will also provide further support for the Coolgaree Bakery and General Store, providing work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.
The Community Development Fund grants are an essential part of the $1.5 billion Remote Jobs and Communities Program, which kicked off in July this year.
The program aims to deliver a more “streamlined and flexible” approach to community development services, employment and participation across remote Australia’s regions.
A single employment provider will assist job seekers, ensuring they are well-supported to get the skills needed to find and retain a job.
