The Queensland government has shown its support for the female workforce, launching a new scholarship scheme to encourage more women into male dominated industries.
State minister for education, training and employment John-Paul Langbroek said applications were now open for the first round of the initiative, encouraging more women to enrol in apprenticeships in Queensland.
The training scheme will support women embarking on careers in traditionally masculine fields, with 500 scholarships of up to $20,000 available over the next four years.
“These scholarships help address Queensland’s skills needs and will give more Queensland women the chance to work in agricultural science, architecture, engineering, geological science, building services and information technology,” Mr Langbroek explained.
“Women who are just finishing school, women looking to change careers and women who are out of the workforce and returning to study are all eligible to apply.
The scholarships are available to support studies from certificate IV through to postgraduate level programs – paying for key costs such as textbooks, course materials and course fees.
For studies commencing in 2013, the scholarship program closes on October 12, with winners to be notified in December.
