A team from Central Queensland has demolished New South Wales’ 22-year-long reign and taken out the national bricklaying competition.
Josh Lewis and Tyson Johnston are currently doing apprenticeships in Queensland, and together with their bricklaying teacher, Peter Carr, formed a three-man team.
They competed against 13 other teams in the Golden Trowel competition, which was held in Coffs Harbour TAFE in New South Wales.
Mr Johnston is in the third year of his apprenticeship in Gladstone and Mr Lewis is a second-year apprentice from Rockhampton.
Teams were required to be made up of a second-year apprentice, a third-year apprentice and a teacher, and they had to demonstrate the level of planning, teamwork and skill required to complete a difficult masonry project.
Competition rules stated the limited amount Mr Carr could contribute to the project. He was only allowed to mark out the area for masonry and the apprentices had to do the complicated brickwork.
“It was a strongly contested competition, so it’s fantastic that our efforts earned us the gold,” Mr Carr told the Morning Bulletin.
The trophy they won will be on display at Central Queensland TAFE campuses over the next few months.
