Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) yesterday revealed the unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.7 per cent, up from 5.6 percent last month. Despite this there was some good news with the Bureau’s results indicating that 39,300 full time jobs were created in November, with only 200 part time jobs lost.
Despite full-time employment increasing 41,500 to 8,126,900 and part-time employment decreased 31,700 to 3,812,000 the Bureau Program Manager says the trend was still firmly towards part-time instead of full-time employment.
In one of the most ambitious youth employment campaigns ever undertaken on the Gold Coast, BUSY At Work has set itself a target of placing 101 Gold Coast Year 12 school leavers and youth into apprenticeships and traineeships in six weeks.
The GC101 Apprenticeship campaign was launched today by Federal Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and Federal Member for McPherson, the Hon Karen Andrews MP.
Following on from Ben’s WorldSkills success, he has had the opportunity to apply for scholarships to work internationally. He is also an Australian Apprenticeship Ambassador and a spokesperson for young people who are prepared to work hard and reach their goals.
There’s a growing demand across Australia for affordable housing, one that’s rearing its head in Queensland as well. It’s a market condition that could benefit apprentices in Queensland in more than one way, especially as construction activity continues to ramp up.
Not only does the new wave of record housing approvals create job opportunities for people working in a range of different trades, it makes it easier to live and work in the state as well. A combination of new housing developments and first-home grants is helping to increase housing affordability. In this respect, apprentices and trainees are helping to ensure there’s a future for them in the state.
According to Tourism Research Australia data, the Queensland’s tourism industry already generates $23 billion a year and contributes 7.5 per cent of gross state product. It supports approximately 220,000 jobs representing one in every 11 positions and could be set to create another 20,000 jobs over the next four years with the State Government’s new action plan.
