Indigenous employment in Queensland is set to receive a boost, thanks to a new federal government initiative.
The Sporting Chance scheme, run by not-for-profit group Titans 4 Tomorrow (T4T), aims to improve career outcomes for female Indigenous students in Queensland and northern NSW by helping them gain the most out of their education.
Federal minister for school education Peter Garrett said the scheme will use sport as an incentive to keep Indigenous students motivated and engaged at school.
Over the next three years, the federal government will inject more than $600,000 into creating three new Sporting Change Academies, the minister explained.
“With the establishment of these new academies, around 300 girls will receive the individual attention and support they need to stay on track, finish their education and get a job,” Mr Garrett added.
The T4T facilities will benefit students from 11 schools in the Northern NSW/Tweed, Surat Basin and Northern Gold Coast/Redlands City regions.
The minister went on to say that the initiative will also engage with parents and the wider community to improve the education and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australian females.
“Students will have opportunities to improve their employability with training and skills development including life skills,” he commented.
