More job opportunities on the horizon with $1.8b contract for QCLNG project

There may be more opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland in the near future with Thiess Australia awarded a “landmark” $1.8 billion contract for the construction of gas compression facilities for the Surat Basin’s Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) project.

The contract extends Theiss’ role in the project and involves the construction of 18 field compression stations and four central processing plants which will service the QCLNG project by October 2014.

These facilities will be located near Dalby, Chinchilla and Wandoan, processing gas that will be sent through an underground pipeline network to Gladstone to be liquefied.

In a September 6 press release, QGC revealed that Theiss will increase their workforce in the Surat Basin from 1,000 to 2,600 by early 2013, as the company proceeds with the “civil, mechanical, piping, instrument and electrical work” in constructing the new facilities.

QCLNG Project Director Mitch Ingram stated that it was a “milestone contract” which will have the LNG plant operating at capacity.

“More broadly this work will continue to provide opportunities for qualified local contractors to supply associated services, which increases the capacity of local industry,” he said.

“The contract also includes a plan that ensures local workers have access to jobs and training opportunities.”
