Mackay City Centre in for $18.6 million transformation

The Mackay City Centre is in for a major makeover with the federal government approving the city council’s application for $8.8 million in Regional Development Australia funding.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said that the city centre hasn’t been refurbished for more than 20 years, with the funding to match the government’s contribution.

“The $18.6 million in funding will deliver council’s City Centre Public Realm Improvement Project including the refurbishment of both sides of Victoria and Wood Streets along with the historic Pioneer Shire Building and adjoining parkland,” Ms Comerford said.

She adds that there will also be new lighting and street furniture, high quality pavements, new shade structures and plenty of trees and greenery installed.

The city improvements are expected to bring an estimated $111 million in economic benefits to the region.

Ms Comerford said that a recent business case reveals that the improvements will create “significant job opportunities” in the city centre, with the construction phase potentially creating opportunities for apprenticeships in Mackay.

“The fresh new look will also result in enhanced community pride and safety, an area that looks new and fresh is more likely to attract positive behaviours,” Ms Comerford concluded.
