LinkedIn tips for job hunters

LinkedIn is a relatively new concept, but one that is set to revolutionise the recruitment process as many employers turn to the digital world to seek out skilled workers.

For employers looking to maximise their employment opportunities through the digital realm, LinkedIn can be a major boon.

Contrary to the misconception that this corporate networking site is all about the number of connections you have, it isn’t. To make the most of this social media site, you want to keep in mind quality rather than quantity.

For example, having 500 connections who you have virtually no contact with is almost pointless. Fifty connections that you have some level of interaction with is much more beneficial, particularly if your connections have the same quality network as you do.

Each person that visits your page is likely to spend no more than five seconds on it, so it is important to ensure it stands out and is clear and concise to attract attention.

One of the most important things to consider for your LinkedIn profile is the headline. It should tell a prospective employer what you do, what you ideally want and would like to be known for.

Just as resumes become tedious for employers to read, so do LinkedIn profiles so make sure yours stands out!

Kathie Kelly, BUSY At Work national recruitment manager agrees, “It’s a good idea to complete your full profile with skills and recommendations and ensure you have a good photo that reflects your career”.

“If you work in mining then a photo in a hard hat is not a silly idea, however if you have your last party photo as your picture doesn’t send a professional message.”

“On LinkedIn enrol in groups that reflect your professional interests and make comments or share interesting articles with the group.”

Spend some time ensuring your page accurately reflects who you are professionally, in a unique and non-generic way.
