Eighteen year old former Dalby State High School student Jana Rojek always knew her family would be behind her when she decided to take up a diesel fitting apprenticeship in January this year.
“My dad has worked as a diesel fitter and growing up I used to help him on the farm doing maintenance on the tractors and other farm equipment. Both mum and dad have supported me from day one and this made my decision to do a trade very easy,” Ms Rojek said.
Jana said she hadn’t looked back since starting her apprenticeship with HEQ Services. The Dalby based company specialises in diesel maintenance, crane hire and labour hire services.
Having completed a traineeship with Arrow Energy during Year 11 and 12, Jana said the experience she gained as a field trainee helped her decide that a career in diesel maintenance was what she really wanted to do.
“I really enjoy working with the qualified fitters either in the workshop or onsite at the gas fields. There’s a great feeling of accomplishment when you finish a rebuild or repair job and know that everything’s running well.”
“Knowing I can do what the other guys do is just a great feeling and there’s always something new to learn every day,” Ms Rojek added.
As a valued member of the HEQ Services mechanical maintenance team, Jana said she had always felt comfortable working in a career which is traditionally dominated by male employees.
“I would definitely like to see more girls joining the trades. In Dalby there are a few other girls like me wanting to become fitters and I think it is good for the industry.”
“I have had nothing but support from the tradesmen here and if you have a passion for something then you should just go for it.”
Jana said that once she completed her apprenticeship she would like to stay in the trade and one day be able to travel around Australia on a working holiday.
BUSY At Work Coordinator Todd Williams said BUSY had provided mentoring support for Jana during her apprenticeship.
“We are excited to see Jana doing well in her apprenticeship and we look forward to seeing Jana achieve her career goals,” Mr Williams said.
HEQ Services Managing Director, Francine Burke said Jana had shown great dedication and a high level of commitment towards all her responsibilities.
“Jana completed work experience with us two years ago while at school and she fitted in very well with the culture here. When she applied for an apprenticeship with us back in September last year we were very impressed with her ability and her commitment to the trade.”
“She is a keen learner and a great asset to the maintenance team,” Ms Burke said.
BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said Jana was a great example for other young women who might be considering undertaking a trade based apprenticeship.
“Jana has proven herself to be a very capable and diligent employee and is a great role model in the workplace. Her commitment and enthusiasm for her apprenticeship ensures she will have a bright career ahead of her,” Mr Miles said.
