Is an apprenticeship your New Year’s resolution?

New Years is a time to reflect on the past and look into the future. As we head into 2014, many Australians are putting their New Year’s resolutions into action.

If your goal is to upskill, retrain or learn a trade, you may want to consider an apprenticeship in Queensland.

Of course, before you make a long-term commitment to an apprenticeship or traineeship, you may want to ask yourself these questions:

Am I too young/old?

Most Australian apprenticeships are open to anyone of working age. It does not matter if you are leaving school for the first time, changing careers as an adult or seeking mature-age apprenticeships in Queensland.

You even have the option to begin a school-based apprenticeship while studying as a Year 11 or 12 student.

What qualifications do I need?

You do not need any qualifications to enter into an Australian apprenticeship.

This allows those who have not completed secondary school or other higher education courses to obtain skills in important trades.

An apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to train, study and earn an income while completing an industry specific qualification.

What apprenticeships are available?

You may be under the impression that apprenticeships are only available for builders, electricians and other trades.

However, training and study is offered in a surprising number of occupations and industries.

Whether you are looking for a career in mining, healthcare, catering or tourism, there is a huge range of apprenticeships available to help you on your way to your desired occupation.

Why will an employer hire an apprentice?

There are many reasons why an employer may want to hire an apprentice, such as trying to create diversity in the workplace, or to cover a skills gap within their organisation.

Importantly, employers may be eligible for certain government incentives for employing an apprentice in Queensland.

These incentives include access to Australian Apprenticeship Centres appointed by the government. The centres offer support and information to employers, apprentices and all other invested parties.

What support do I have?

Making the choice to enter into an apprenticeship in Queensland can be a daunting decision so it helps to know who is on your side.

Working with an apprentice support service, such as BUSY at Work, can ensure you and your potential employer understand all your rights and obligations.

This means that the process will be fair and supportive, encouraging you from your first steps into the program, through to successful completion.
