BUSY At Work is delivering an exciting new program with Careers Australia Training to help young job seekers gain a start in the transport and logistics industry.
The five week program called Hit the Road is part of the Queensland Government funded initiative, Skilling Queenslanders for Work.
BUSY At Work Program Coordinator for Hit the Road, Robyn Donnelly said the program had been running since last November and they were looking for participants to fill the new course which would begin in Ipswich on 4 April.
“The Hit the Road Program is a great way for job seekers aged between 15 and 24 to improve their employability and work readiness skills. We are very pleased with the success of the initial courses so far and it is a great opportunity for the participants to secure a future in the transport industry,” Ms Donnelly said.
Robyn said the program was a mixture of classroom based training and hands-on activities with participants being able to gain practical skills with on-the-job placement as well as being able to update their resumes and learn interviewing skills.
“BUSY At Work is delivering the one on one mentoring and life skill development presentations to the participants to ensure that they are job ready while Careers Australia Training are delivering the accredited training component of the program,” Ms Donnelly added.
Careers Australia Training Manager – Corporate, Damien Love said graduates from the program would receive a Certificate II in Logistics as well as gaining their Medium Rigid (MR) truck licence.
“This certificate provides students with the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of operations within a road transport, freight forwarding or warehouse environment. Working under direct supervision, the students can learn the skills and knowledge, daily routines procedures and freight scheduling associated with the transport industry,” Mr Love said.
One participant who recently graduated from the Hit the Road Program is 20 year old Dylan Williams. Before entering the program Dylan said he had been applying for jobs for two years without success.
“To improve my chances of getting a job I decided to volunteer at St Vincent de Paul to get experience in warehousing and also to get my hours up using the forklift.”
“During this time I applied for many jobs but soon after completing the Hit the Road Program was able to secure a part time job with Rubber and Solid Woven Belting Supplies in Goodna.”
“I am grateful to be able to work 24 hours a week and hope it will lead to a full time job in the future. I am also thankful to the mentoring support provided by Robyn at BUSY AT Work,” Dylan said.
Robyn said Dylan was an exemplary student who had shown great determination and commitment to the program.
“Dylan was an enthusiastic student and never missed a day throughout the program and we are delighted that he has been able to secure work as a result of the program,” Ms Donnelly said.
BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said BUSY was pleased to partner with Careers Australia Training in the Skilling Queenslanders Hit the Road Program.
“At BUSY At Work we know how important it is for job seekers to gain a full understanding of their new working environment.”
“Through the Hit the Road Program job seekers can gain a real understanding of the physical and mental challenges associated with working in the transport industry before they even start work allowing them to make the transition in a more productive way,” Mr Miles said.
The training for the Hit the Road Program is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government through its Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
