Mature age employee Dianne Smith has never been one to shy away from hard work.
The Cairns local had been previously unemployed for two years in Melbourne but has now found her feet in the tropical north after securing full time work in a field she has always enjoyed.
With the help of jobactive CoAct BUSY At Work Employment Consultant, Jessica Campbell and Placement Officer, Jason Meyer, Dianne is now working 40 hours a week as a cleaner with respected local business, Abelia Cleaning.
Jessica said Dianne had shown great application and determination to push through the barriers and achieve her goal of full time employment.
“Dianne came to us in May last year after being self employed as a house cleaner. At the time she was working irregular hours and struggling to make ends meet. We referred Dianne to a temporary job at Sunstate who were the responsible contractor for dismantling the Masters’ hardware store in Cairns.”
“While Dianne was working alongside other males dismantling the pallet racking and getting it ready for shipping she received a number of positive comments from her employer for her outstanding performance.”
“Being the oldest and only female among the group, Dianne showed she was more than able to match it with her fellow co-workers.”
“We were able to provide Dianne with mentoring in resume writing and interview techniques as well as assist her to get her White Card and Personal Protective Clothing (PPE),” Ms Campbell said.
Following her positive experience with Sunstate, Jason canvassed multiple employees and recommended Dianne to Abelia Cleaning, where she was successful in gaining a full time position in January this year.
“Dianne’s employer is very happy with her work ethic and she is now supervising other staff. Not only that, she even has her own company car and hasn’t looked back since taking on the role,” Ms Campbell added.
Dianne said she was ecstatic to be back in the workforce and thankful for the support provided by the staff at BUSY At Work’s Smithfield Office.
“I am really enjoying the work and am rapt just to be getting a regular weekly pay packet. I feel I have fitted in very well with the other employees and am looking forward to a long future with them.”

As for the future Dianne said she was looking forward to one day buying a property in Cairns.
