Development of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Village is one step closer to kicking off, after an expressions of interest (EOI) campaign was launched for the massive construction project.
Deputy premier Jeff Seeney said the infrastructure project, which may create Gold Coast apprenticeships, is one of the biggest of its kind to be undertaken in south-east Queensland.
“It will host some 6,500 athletes and team officials and is a vital piece of infrastructure necessary for the Commonwealth Games,” he explained.
“The development of the Games Village will be a significant boost to Queensland’s construction industry and generate economic development for the Gold Coast community.”
The EOI process comes after a 29.4 hectare Parklands site in Southport was declared a Priority Development Area (PDA) in February, a move that fast-tracked the village’s progress, Mr Seeney remarked.
Following on from the 2018 sporting event, the Games Village will be transformed into a mixed-use centre located in the heart of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, comprising research, retail, commercial, residential, recreational and community facilities.
The Commonwealth Games is expected to inject $2 billion into the local economy, and create up to 30,000 jobs in the region.
