Twenty two year old Lucas Richardson knows how hard it can be to make ends meet when you are not getting enough work hours but his determination to improve his job readiness skills has not gone unnoticed by BUSY At Work Program Coordinator/Mentor, Robyn Donnelly.
After completing a Bachelor of Music Technology and working part time at Woolworth’s for a number of years, Lucas’s determination to succeed is finally starting to pay dividends.
Earlier this month Lucas took part in an exciting new program being delivered by BUSY At Work and secured himself additional work hours as a casual crew member with Hungry Jacks.
Ms Donnelly said the two week Get BUSY Get Fit program is designed to help young job seekers aged between 15 and 24, improve their employ-ability and job readiness skills.
The training is funded and supported by the Queensland Government through its Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
The program covers areas such as budgeting, goal setting, personal presentation, computer skills, resume writing, interview skills, time management and healthy lifestyle training.
Robyn said the program was a mixture of classroom-based training and hands on activities with BUSY delivering the one-on-one mentoring and life skill development presentations while Men of Business (MOB) are delivering the Healthy Lifestyle component part of the program.
“It’s a very practical course with the participants able to get those employability skills to help them build their confidence and provide a pathway to careers in business, retail, construction and hospitality,” Ms Donnelly said.
Robyn said Lucas had excelled throughout the program.
“Lucas was very committed to the program and always showed a positive attitude to learning new skills. We are delighted that he has now gone on to secure additional retail work with Hungry Jacks,” Ms Donnelly added.
Lucas said he was very pleased to be working more hours and looking forward to doing further study next year.
“My immediate goal has been to try and get enough work hours to help me live comfortably while I’m studying to be a teacher.”
“The course really helped with my confidence and I am now able to present myself to a much higher standard in interviews.”
“I am grateful for the mentoring support provided by Robyn and am now looking forward to majoring in music and information technology during my teaching studies next year,” Lucas said.
Robyn said they were currently looking for participants for the next Get BUSY Get Fit program which will be held in February next year.
“We’ve had great feedback from the initial program with all of the participants completing the program and improving their employability for future work.” Mrs Donnelly said.
BUSY At Work Managing Director, Paul Miles said BUSY was pleased to be helping young job seekers improve their employability skills.
“We know how important it is for young job seekers to take the first step to gaining employment. By helping them improve their work readiness skills and providing employment mentoring we can set them on a career pathway for the future,” Mr Miles said.
