High schoolers interested in pursuing apprenticeships in Toowoomba will be able to find the support and information they need to kickstart their desired career when the Fogs Indigenous Employment Expo comes into town on September 11.
These expos held across Queensland from March through to October help provide Indigenous job seekers and school leavers with the opportunity to meet with a range of education and training providers, employers and even State of Origin greats to speak about career options and pathways.
The federal government initiative, supported by Construction Skills Queensland, presents information on various professions including plumbing, tourism, hospitality, building and construction, security, childcare, mining, nursing and more.
Speaking at the ‘Closing the Gap’ breakfast forum in Toowoomba earlier this month, Former Origin Greats Executive Chairman Gene Miles said that rugby league was a “great vehicle” in getting the attention of students.
“A big draw card at the expos is the appearance of a number of current and former Queensland origin stars,” Mr Miles said via The Chronicle.
“Many of the participants look up to their football heroes so what they have to say about the importance of a career can leave a lasting impression.”
The free expo will take place at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre from 9am to 2pm.
