Works on the reconstruction of Cooper Street in North Rockhampton began this week (April 15), with crews working to repair damage from the 2011 floods.
Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee, councillor Glenda Mather, said the $310,000 works will not only repair flood damage from 2011 but also improve driver visibility over the crest of the road and maintain the “flooding immunity” at this location.
“This project involves the upgrade of underground stormwater infrastructure, placement of new road pavement, installation of new kerb and channel, replacement of a section of concrete footpath and placement of new asphalt surfacing,” councillor Mather said.
The works are expected to take seven weeks to complete – weather permitting – and may present opportunities for apprenticeships in Rockhampton.
Deputy mayor Tony Williams said that the reconstruction was one that locals had been campaigning for, adding that it would be great to see crews getting stuck into a project that will improve safety conditions in the area.
Mr Williams said there will be some temporary road closures during the works, as well as reduced speed zones and an alternative path for school students and pedestrians.
“We thank the community for their patience during this time and apologise for any inconvenience,” he said.
