While this reflects the values that Queenslanders have in their environment, it also presents a challenge to local councils and the state government to provide infrastructure that can support this lifestyle.
However, the existing bridge is rapidly nearing the end of its life. The current two-lane bridge has been in place since the 1960’s and is expected to reach maximum capacity in 2031. In the last five years, there have also been seven closures to the 835 metre-long bridge. For locals and tourists, this makes the island much less accessible, with this decreasing further in future years.
To promote future growth in this sector, the Queensland government has released its plan to oversee the development of the deep oil and gas resources across the state’s west and north-west.
This network is being further added to in coming years, with the much-anticipated bus and train (BaT) project moving closer to breaking ground.
The good news for future apprentices is that employment across the state is expected to continue growing. In fact, the Ministerial industry Commission predicts that employment in the state will peak over the next few years, at times reaching almost four per cent growth a year.
Air travel is the backbone of Queensland’s tourism industry, attracting visitors from right across the country, along with increasing numbers from overseas. This growth is already driving a number of changes, from plans to make Brisbane airport one of the largest in the country, to new hotels and entertainment facilities around the state.
The fourth and final round opened today, offering regional councils another $210 million in new funding to help with projects which will boost the development of communities in regional Queensland.
However, the shoreline further up the Brisbane River has remained relatively undeveloped, with the Kurilpa area still retaining a largely industrial focus.
Finding appropriate water storage is also essential for any community facing extreme weather systems in Queensland’s north. As flooding along the coastline has revealed in recent years, having a well-protected water supply is essential for providing vital resources in the aftermath of a storm.
The Commission has predicted the industries which will see the most growth between 2011 and 2025, giving a good indication of which careers are going to be in highest demand.
