Nancy Pilot from the Torres Strait was a stay at home mum for 11 years, before she officially signed into a Certificate III in Hospitality
Six months ago, Torres Strait Islander woman, Nancy Pilot would never have believed that she would hold the confidence and skills required to land a
Statim-Yaga program which focuses on supporting Indigenous employees in the construction industry. In Dale’s case the program has delivered mentoring support and career planning to him and his new employer Dig-It.
Eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander job seekers drawn from all over South East Queensland are now well on their way to kick starting a career in the electrical or related trade industry.
BUSY At Work is proudly supporting a new employment program which is producing some excellent results in building Indigenous careers in the construction and building industry.
BUSY At Work Project Coordinator/Mentor Robyn Donnelly said BUSY was delighted to partner with Australia’s largest privately owned builder Hutchinson Builders to deliver the Statim-Yaga program. Statim-Yaga is derived from Torres Strait Islander Creole and the Jagera language and means to “start work.”
When Andersyn Landt started doing general cleaning and gardening at the Mackay and District Australian South Sea Islander Association (MADASSIA) centre as a participant in a Working for the Dole (WfD) activity, she never imagined it might lead to a possible future career in the administration field.
As well as developing her Microsoft Office skills and assisting with office clerical duties Andersyn is also studying for her Certificate III in Business Administration which she hopes to complete by the end of the year.
Year 11 and 12 students Ethan Atkins and Zaine Davis have a lot to celebrate after becoming the first ever indigenous school-based trainees to be signed up to the Corroboree attraction at the Dreamworld Amusement Park.
Dreamworld Corroboree showcases Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander history and culture (the world’s oldest living culture) and features over 800 native and barnyard animals located in their natural habitats within the Dreamworld grounds.
A recent graduate of the five week program which targets job seekers aged between 15 and 24, and Indigenous and disadvantaged job seekers, Joshua has proved to be an excellent student and his determination to succeed is now paying dividends.
Before entering the program Joshua had not been able to secure employment and despite not having been employed for over a year, nothing could hold him back.
Since starting her Certificate III in Business in July this year Cathy Coulthard is revelling in the responsibilities that come with her school-based Traineeship with Morris Corporation.
The BUSY Group acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to the land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and their Elders past and present.
