Unemployment has dipped to near two-year lows, according to the state government. In fact, organisations have created approximately 50,800 jobs in Queensland since February 2015, with 5,100 vacancies becoming available in November alone.
The Brisbane economy received approximately $7.8 billion in the 2014-15 financial year from the state’s resources sector. The industry also supported almost 170,000 jobs in Queensland.
The number of jobs in Queensland could be set to rise, after the state government revealed people are increasingly confident about the future.
Queensland’s apprentices and trainees are set to receive a boost, as the state government introduces a new bill that is designed to strengthen the vocational education and training (VET) sector.
Over the next 20 years, Mackay and its associated regions are expected to see high population growth. As a result of its flourishing economy, the coastal hub is becoming one of the go-to locations in Queensland, and the council is eager to build on this momentum.
For a number of years, Aboriginal unemployment has been a focus for state and federal governments. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent are more than 20 per cent less likely to be in employment compared to non-indigenous people.
As Cape York is one of the most remote locations on mainland Australia, it is important that the state government and local councils continue to support employment opportunities for the region’s growing Aboriginal population.
Due to the significant size of Queensland’s roading network, transport infrastructure is always going to be a major topic for the state government, city councils and construction businesses. In fact, as population increases, this is an issue that will only grow in importance.
With Queensland one of Australia’s leaders in natural resources, the prospect of new projects and investment is never too far out of the question. In fact, a recent joint announcement between the state government and QGC could open the door to many Queensland apprenticeship opportunities over the coming years.
