Australian employment outlook positive

The Australian employment sector looks set to strengthen, with a recent survey showing one in five employers is planning to increase hiring over the next three months.

According to the 2012 Manpower Employment Outlook Survey the outlook for employers remains positive, despite uncertain global economic conditions.

The survey of 2,200 Australian employers, which measured hiring intentions over the last quarter, found that 20 per cent of businesses expected that they would increase recruitment, while only 11 per cent of companies planned to decrease hiring.

“While the last 12 months have seen a slow downward trend for employer hiring confidence, there is certainly no sign of panic; in fact one in five employers plan to increase hiring in the last quarter of 2012, while the vast majority will maintain their staff levels,” ManpowerGroup Australia and New Zealand managing director Lincoln Crawley said.

Demand for skilled workers in the nation’s thriving resource sector remained strong, with Western Australian and Queensland both showing a positive outlook for employment within the mining and resource sectors.

“The industry sector survey results support the view that there is a structural shift occurring in the economy, with demand for professional skills in areas such as services and mining helping to offset the continued loss of manufacturing positions,” Mr Crawley added.
