The flood proofing of Blakeys Crossing will finally begin next month after the appointment of BMD Constructions Pty Ltd as the company to undertake the project.
The $24 million upgrade includes the construction of a new intersection at Blakeys/Ingham Rd, two bridges, asphalted sealed roadways, road embankments and stormwater drainage.
This project could provide opportunities for those interested in pursuing apprenticeships in Townsville.
The Townsville City Council announced BMD Constructions as the successful tenderer on August 27 with the crossing works expected to take a year to build.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill commented that the appointment of BMD was the “last formal step” in the planning process with it now just a case of getting set up on site to begin work.
“The upgrade of Blakeys is a big project that has required a considerable amount of technical investigation and detailed planning to come up with the best design solution,” Ms Hill said.
“With the generous funding support of the state government, we will finally flood proof an important section of road that services local industry and businesses and the broader community who use it every day.”
