Solid partners Solid futures: Improving education, training and employment outcomes for Queensland’s Indigenous students

Indigenous employment, training and education is set to receive more support with the Newman government launching a four-year plan, Solid partners Solid futures, to improve outcomes for Queensland’s Indigenous students.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said that this plan will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at “all stages of life”, from early childhood through to schooling, training, tertiary education and employment.

“There is a significant difference in outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Queenslanders,” Mr Langbroek said.

He added that he, along with minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes, was instructed to form an education program to help close the gap.

“Our goal, and the shared responsibility of all partners, is that young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the confidence, skills and knowledge to make a valuable contribution to the well-being of their families, communities and to all Queensland.”

The plan would trial individual case management for Indigenous students, including identifying skills and interests in early secondary students and building the career aspirations of students together with their parents, teachers and communities.

Student skills, interests and aspirations will also be actively linked to further education providers and employers toward the end of high school.
