Next stage of construction for major Orion Shopping Centre expansion begins

Retailers such as Amart Sports, Hogs Breath Cafe and BCF are all due to open before Christmas this year, with a new supermarket also in the works for Orion Springfield Town Centre.

The project could present opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland, with the Queensland Times reporting today (April 22) that the expansion is expected to provide 550 jobs during construction and another 600 once the stores are operational.

The first stage of the development was completed late last year with stores like Kmart, Bridgestone Select and KFC opening in The Circuit.

“The Greater Springfield community has warmly welcomed the new additions to Orion and we are looking forward to opening the second stage later this year,” said Mirvac’s General Manager – Retail Susan MacDonald.

The Queensland Times reports that the extension was approved by the Ipswich City Council in February, with 40 additional specialty stores, nearly 600 new car parking spaces and extra commercial suites to join the new supermarket.

Ms MacDonald said that they are “excited by the progress” and are working to ensure that they have the right tenants to make Orion an even more vibrant and successful community centre.
