Work kicks off on $96.1 million upgrade of Pumicestone Road interchange

Queensland’s Bruce Highway is the site of a number of upgrades that could create opportunities for apprenticeships in Brisbane and other state towns.

One project that has already seen work commence is the $96.1 million upgrade of the Pumicestone Road interchange, which lies between Caboolture and Caloundra.

The upgrade is fully funded by the federal government and Acciona Infrastructure Australia has been appointed to take on the project.

More than 50,000 vehicles use the interchange each day, with heavy road vehicles having to detour from the Bruce Highway because of the low clearance beneath the current overpass (4.5m).

A higher 6.5m two-lane overpass will be built over the highway as a part of the upgrade, with the project to also lengthen and straighten on and off-ramps, and improve the intersections with local roads.

These changes will help to improve freight safety and efficiency, enhance capacity of the interchange to cater to traffic growth and future development in the area, and grant greater visibility for turning movements at ramp intersections.

The project is expected to be completed in July 2014.
