Unemployment falls in QLD

Employment conditions are looking more favourable for Queenslanders, after recent figures revealed the number of people without work fell for the third consecutive month in January.

Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force Data, released today (February 7), showed unemployment dropped to 5.9 per cent.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the data represented the fourth consecutive monthly rise in employment – a major boost for the state’s economy.

“Queensland now has a lower seasonally adjusted unemployment rate than Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania,” Mr Nicholls commented.

“More than 30,000 jobs were created in Queensland in January, 11,000 of which were full time (seasonally adjusted).”

With more jobs being created in the state, the latest figures may also create opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland.

Mr Nicholls said in further good news for the state, a Master Builders industry confidence survey released last week showed confidence grew in almost every region in the last three months of last year.

“Display centre traffic increased and both turnover and profitability improved during the December quarter,” he explained.

The treasurer said the report was just one sign that Queensland’s economy was headed in the right direction.
