Queensland moves ahead with multi-million Costco development

Australia is set to welcome its fourth Costco outlet, with the US retail giant branching out into North Lakes, Queensland.

The new development is expected to create several hundred jobs, which may also provide opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland.

Around 160 construction job openings and 350 retail positions are forecast with the green light of the project.

Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney stated that the development will provide new business opportunities in the north Brisbane-Moreton Bay regions, and contribute to “growing and stimulating the construction industry”.

“I formed the view that this development contributes to the future economic well-being of Queensland, in particular the fast growing south-east region,” he said.

Costco is a membership-only warehouse club that sells a variety of products including food, appliances, hardware, furniture, apparel, books and homewares.

Queensland’s first Costco will join its other Australian outlets in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

The location of the new Costco, North Lakes, was awarded Australia and Queensland’s Best Masterplanned Community in 2010, with this project set to boost the city’s appeal.
