Queensland industry sectors ‘engaging with schools’

Industry sectors throughout Queensland are continuing to engage with schools and young students, a report has noted.

Issued by Skills Queensland, the Gateway to Industry Schools Program Annual Report 2011-12 highlighted that many groups are using innovative ways to become involved with schools.

“Engagement between industry and schools is a critical element of Queensland’s workforce development framework and it plays an important role in helping young Queenslanders make a successful transition from school to work or further education,” said Skills Queensland chief executive officer Rod Camm.

He emphasised that by working together, these groups can deliver results for students, local communities and businesses.

Some of those involved in the program will support the professional development of teachers, while others will provide school-based apprenticeships.

Hervey Bay’s WIN Constructions Queensland recently gave 14 students from local schools the chance to gain an insight into the building and construction industry by taking part in the Doorways 2 Construction program.

The scheme involves hands-on experience, as well as theoretical guidance on the sectors they are working in.

Once the youngsters have completed the scheme they will be given a Certificate I in General Construction, which could improve their chances of finding youth jobs.
