QLD LNG projects attract jobseekers

Queensland’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector continues to provide thousands of employment opportunities across the state, with more than 500 jobseekers recently attending a recruitment session for Curtis Island projects.

According to an APN report today (February 5), the Bechtel recruitment information session held in Gladstone last week (January 31) attracted significant interest from locals.

Bechtel is currently looking to hire thousands of skilled and experienced workers to build three new LNG plants on Curtis Island – a project which may generate opportunities for apprenticeships in Gladstone.

Kevin Berg, general manager of Bechtel Gladstone, said they are looking for professionals with experience in crane operation, pipe fitting, boilermaking, welding and rigging, as well as electrical and instrumentation tradespeople.

Bechtel recruitment supervisor Joel Herbert said finding the right employees to work on the multibillion-dollar gas projects is integral.

“We’re building world class LNG plants, and we need world class people to construct them. Our projects have a focus on ethics and safety in all areas at all times,” Mr Herbert explained.

Last week’s employment information evening in Gladstone was the first of several meetings to be held this year as part of Bechtel’s recruitment campaign.

The latest jobs announcement comes after Deloitte Access Economics’ December quarter 2012 Business Outlook report stated mega-mining building projects “are hurtling towards a peak” in 2013.
