Of the 17 bridge renewal initiatives confirmed in Queensland, 11 will be overseen and delivered by local councils.
Queensland projects
Somerset Regional Council is responsible for managing three of the projects, including the replacement of a one-lane timber bridge with a two-lane concrete upgrade. The $1.76 million initiative will receive $883,000 in federal funds.
However, the largest project on the agenda is a $70 million renovation being handled by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads. It will involve the replacement of four timber bridges with concrete structures at Peak Downs Highway between Nebo and Mackay.
“The Peak Downs Highway is one of the primary routes to the coal-rich Bowen Basin,” said Mr Bailey.
“The replacement of four timber bridges with wider, stronger bridge structures and better flood resilience will greatly improve the flow of freight and enhance safety for all road users along this busy route.”
Half of the funding for the project will come from the Australian government, which is roughly 60 per cent of the total budget for Queensland’s bridge upgrades.
