Jobs focus for Gold Coast Aquatic Centre project

Gold Coast apprenticeships in construction could be on the horizon, with the contractor for a major redevelopment project in the region stating local job creation is a priority.

Property development specialist Watpac was awarded a contract to upgrade the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre after a two-stage expression of interest and tender process.

The initiative is geared towards building a world-class aquatic centre for the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and the water events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said the fact Watpac had committed to generating opportunities for Queenslanders was a key to the company winning the agreement.

“As joint project partners, the Newman government and the Gold Coast City Council want to generate more employment for our region and the pool redevelopment alone will deliver approximately 350 new jobs,” he explained.

According to Mr Tate, it is extremely important that the project provides wider economic benefits to the community.

State tourism minister Jann Stuckey agreed, adding that Watpac has an “excellent record” for delivering high-profile infrastructure schemes and is dedicated to using local resources.

The Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning will manage the project, while Gold Coast City Council will work alongside the government agency and Watpac to ensure minimal disruption to businesses and residents.
