Indigenous employment expo kicks-off in Rockhampton

Rockhampton residents and businesses will combine forces today to promote job opportunities and boost indigenous employment levels in the region.

Former Origin Greats (FOGS), a non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting communities, rugby league and charities in Queensland, will launch its Indigenous Employment and Career Expo in Rockhampton today, with more than 50 exhibitors expected to take part in the event.

State minister for indigenous employment and economic development Julie Collins said the expos run by FOGS were a valuable opportunity for young indigenous Australians to explore potential career pathways.

“Our partnership with FOGS is all about promoting the message that we want young indigenous to stay in school and aspire to gaining secure jobs for themselves, as well as becoming leaders in their communities,” Ms Collins explained.

The expos, now in their fourth year, are part of the government’s Learn Earn Legend! campaign and will be held in seven locations across the state this year.

Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore said the Rockhampton community had shown an overwhelming level of support for the event, which is expected to be attended by 1,450 indigenous school leavers and job seekers from the region.

Ms Livermore explained: “Employers have a critical role to play by employing local people in local jobs. I am sure the expo will deliver great outcomes and opportunities for the Rockhampton community.”
