Gold Coast prepares for 2018 Commonwealth Games

As the Gold Coast prepares to host one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events – the Commonwealth Games – the local construction sector is set to see a flurry of activity over the coming years.

The multimillion-dollar upgrade of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre – a project that may generate opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland – is one of several developments earmarked for the city over the next five years.

Speaking on Sunday (January 27), state minister for tourism, major events, small business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said expressions of interest were being sought by local enterprises to work on the project.

She commented: “This is the first of many opportunities for local, suitably experienced and qualified subcontractors and suppliers, to be a part of the Commonwealth Games facilities delivery.”

The revamped facility, which will open in time to host the 2014 Pan Pacific Masters Games, will become the venue for swimming and diving competitions at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said the international sporting event will have significant benefits for the region, with it not only stimulating the local economy, but it also generating more jobs for Queenslanders.

“This is just the start of the opportunities that will roll out over coming years, so my message to Gold Coast businesses and suppliers is be ready,” he explained.
