Funding supports Indigenous employment scheme

A total of 26 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Men’s Sheds and groups throughout Australia have received a share of government funding.

Minister for Indigenous health Warren Snowdon acknowledged the positive work that these organisations do, especially as they help provide skills that will support Indigenous employment.

“Men’s Sheds and men’s groups provide a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males can connect with their elders and work on traditional and cultural activities,” he commented.

The $125,000 worth of grants will be used for constructing new buildings, as well as carrying out maintenance work and supplying tools.

Earlier this month, a forum was held to discuss the barriers that Indigenous people face when trying to secure youth employment.

Around 100 people attended the event from a number of different cultural backgrounds, while members of industry and government were also on hand to offer advice.

Glen Elmes, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and multicultural affairs minister, highlighted that the forum provided a platform for youngsters to discuss issues with potential employers and expand their contact base.

“It is also a great opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and abilities to employers,” the minister noted.
