First-year apprentice wins at WorldSkills Competition

First-year apprentice Ted Halpin won third place at the WorldSkills MTA AutoBody competition in Brisbane on September 18.

Held at the Motor Trade Association (MTA) Institute of Technology, the competition attracted automotive apprentices from all over Queensland.

Competing against second, third and fourth year apprentices, Halpin demonstrated impressive skills in automotive vehicle body repairs to take the third place prize.

Since February this year, Halpin has been an active participant in BUSY At Work’s mentoring program, after securing an apprenticeship with Prestige Smash Repairs in November 2012. BUSY At Work is an Australian Apprenticeship Centre contracted by the Australian Government to provide information and advice on apprenticeships.

“Prestige Smash repairs has a long standing relationship with BUSY At Work, and are committed to training new people in this industry. They have a reputation for quality training which produces quality tradespeople,” said Sheryl Woznitza, BUSY At Work Regional Manager for Sunshine Coast – Wide Bay.

Achieving third place in the highly competitive event is an outstanding achievement for a first year apprentice. With this win, Halpin has proven he is a very motivated and focussed young man in his own right, said Ms Woznitza.

“BUSY would like to congratulate Ted for this achievement in the first year of his apprenticeship. It is a testament to his commitment to learning the trade and his employer for ensuring the training he’s receiving is of the highest calibre,” she said.
