Are you eligible for the Living Away from Home Allowance?

If you’re in need of extra financial apprentice support, then you may want to find out if you are eligible for the Living Away from Home Allowance (LAFHA).

This allowance is useful for apprentices or trainees who are moving away from their parents’ or guardians’ home and is available to Australian Apprentices of any age during their first three years of training.

You may be eligible for the allowance if you need to move away from home for the first time to take up or remain in an Australian Apprenticeship or in order to receive “essential supplementary” on-the-job training with another employer.

If you are homeless, or become homeless, while undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship, you may also be able to receive the allowance.

However, the LAFHA is not open to Australian Apprentices who have rental or accommodation assistance from their employer or Centrelink, those who move away from their parental/legal guardian’s home three months or more before starting their apprenticeship, or those who have lodged a claim for Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy.

To apply for the LAFHA you will need to submit an application to your Australian Apprenticeships Centre.
