Alicia finds her feet in administration career

Alicia McCauley has tried her hand at a few different careers over the years but it wasn’t until she moved into office administration in Gladstone that she found her true vocation.

Alicia is just one of 200 jobseekers who have gained employment and qualifications through the QGC Strengthening Local Workforces Program.

The program is a partnership between QGC and BUSY At Work and aims to assist local businesses to manage new apprenticeships and traineeships in the Western Downs, North Burnett, Banana and local government areas.

“With the mentoring support I received I was really motivated to complete my certificate on time. The monthly visits from my mentor really helped me focus on the things I needed to get done and ensure that my study plans were all up to date. Without the program I would not have been able to complete my traineeship early,” Alicia said.

“I’d worked in hospitality and retail but wasn’t really passionate about the work I was involved in. The jobs were fine but I couldn’t see myself working in those careers for a long time.”

“When I moved to Gladstone from Airlie Beach in 2014 I started as a Trainee Administration Assistant with Narbil Training. I have really enjoyed working with the E Learning Team and processing the face-to-face and online course information. The skills I’ve learned have given me a great chance to build a future career in administration,” Alicia said.

Narbil Training is a Gladstone based training company offering in-house and online training in the construction, oil and gas, hospitality and mining industries.

With a secure job behind her, Alicia went on to complete her Certificate III in Office Administration within four months. She is now studying for her Certificate IV which she hopes to complete in the next few months.

Alicia’s supervisor Carlina Huth said Alicia performed extremely well throughout her traineeship and was a valuable member of the E Learning Team.

“Alicia is a quick learner who has always shown a willingness to help other members of the team. She fully understands the responsibilities that go with the role and has performed at a very high level,” Ms Huth said.

BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said Alicia’s positive attitude and commitment to her traineeship had set a great example for other young people to follow in achieving their career goals.

“With mentoring support from the QGC Strengthening Local Workforces Program Alicia now has the skills and ability to make her mark in the administrative area. She is not only making a positive contribution to her employer but to the local Gladstone region in which she lives,” Mr Miles said.
