Local Atherton resident Shane Graham knows what it’s like not to have regular work and what it can do for your self-confidence.

Shane has been a client of the BUSY At Work Atherton office since July last year and has now secured fulltime casual work which has given him a new lease on life and helped him secure his future.

BUSY At Work Employment Consultant Mareeba, Leona Hallam said Shane had grown in confidence and was determined to move forward with his life.

“When Shane came to us last year he had been long term unemployed doing the occasional seasonal farm work. Our staff worked very closely with Shane to build his work capacity and help him apply for local jobs.”

“Twelve months ago Shane was successful in obtaining part time casual work as a night fill employee with Big W, however Shane was keen to gain more permanent work with longer hours.”

“After applying for various local roles with no luck we then tried a new approach with Shane enrolling him in a Certificate II in Retail,” Ms Hallam said.

Shane completed the course with flying colours. Soon after Recruitment Consultant from AP Global Mareeba, Damien Vije contacted Shane to offer him a casual role as a forklift driver and labourer at local company Visy Board Box Factory.

The company manufacturers corrugated cardboard boxes for the fruit and produce industries.

Since starting in September, Shane hasn’t looked back and has received glowing reports from his employer.

Shane said he was ecstatic to be working in his new role and thankful for the support he received from BUSY At Work.

“I love coming to work each day and spending time on the forklift. I’m getting plenty of work hours and learning more about the production side with the boxes. My trial will finish in a month but I’m confident I will be able to secure full time permanent work,” Shane enthused.

“I am very thankful for the support provided by Leona and Megan from the BUSY At Work office. From the moment I made contact with them, they have really shown an interest in me and cared about what I wanted to do.”

“They have really assisted me with my interviewing skills and applying for jobs which has helped me improve my self confidence,” Shane added.

Damien Vije also shared Shane’s confidence saying Shane was now a valued member of the team at the Visy Board Box Factory.

“We have regular tool box meetings with Shane and other staff at the factory. Shane has demonstrated excellent skills on the forklift and always works safely. He is keen to learn more about the other different roles at the factory and we believe he will continue to be an asset to the company,” Mr Vije said.

BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said BUSY was delighted to see Shane performing well in his chosen career.

“At BUSY At Work we know how difficult it can be for mature aged long term unemployed job seekers to make the transition back into full time work.”

“We wish Shane all the best in the future and with the right training and mentoring we know he will be well equipped to face the challenges in his new working environment,” Mr Miles said.
