Brisbane to receive $1.3bn casino-resort?

The development of a $1.3 billion casino in the heart of Brisbane could create up to 7,700 constructions jobs in Queensland – generating significant economic benefits for the state.

Echo Entertainment chief executive John Redmond said the delivery of an “integrated resort” is “long overdue”, with the company having struggled with capacity issues at its existing Treasury Casino and hotel for several years, The Australian reports.

The billion-dollar project, which may create opportunities for apprenticeships in Brisbane, would comprise gambling venues, 500 hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, as well as retail shops.

Mr Redmond said a minimum five hectare site would be needed for the development, which would take about three years to design and build.

“The scope of investment is being looked at across both Brisbane and the Gold Coast,” News Limited quoted him as saying.

“But, (it’s) safe to say that investment in the Brisbane market would probably be in the order of magnitude of a billion dollars, to build the type of resort that would make sense for this market.”

The project will create an estimated 7,700 jobs during the construction phase and an additional 6,200 positions upon the resort’s operation.
