Biggest tourism project in QLD to create jobs

Queensland’s government has revealed that the state’s largest ever tourism project has been given the green light.

The announcement could generate opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland, with premier Campbell Newman stating that hundreds of full-time and part-time positions will be created during its development.

Describing it as a “wonderful economic boost”, Mr Newman said the $1.4 billion initiative at Ella Bay, near Innisfail, could bring in up to $256 million a year.

“Over a 15-year construction period, the developer expects to employ a peak workforce of just over 400 in year eight and, once completed, create more than 800 full-time operational jobs, as well as 240 part-time peak-season jobs,” he explained.

According to the politician, the announcement shows the state government’s dedication to making tourism a part of the region’s four-pillar economy.

The project will include three resort precincts, four residential precincts, an 18-hole golf course and a retail village.

Construction vacancies were highlighted as a particular benefit, with 860 units and villas being built, as well as 540 permanent houses.

Hinchinbrook MP Andrew Cripps said the development will create a number of opportunities for tradespeople and contractors.

The news will be greatly received by a region that is still overcoming the effects of Cyclone Yasi, he added.
