Do you have mature-age staff who are in need of upskilling or may be at risk of redundancy? Through the Skills Checkpoint program, a range of services are available to employers with eligible staff, including:

Upskilling or re-skilling for staff

Businesses and the skills they require change over time.

To recognise this, the government is seeking to co-invest with employers in the ongoing development of their workforce.

The Skills and Training Incentive (the Incentive), directly linked to the Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers program, provides an opportunity for employers to update the skills of their older workers, increasing their productivity.

To retain and develop staff, businesses need to invest in training and reskilling. The Incentive provides an opportunity for employers to reduce the costs of updating the skills of their older workers and ensure their business is better able to adapt to change.

Assisting employees to transition to a new career

We know that you want the best for your employees, but circumstances sometimes mean that roles are no longer available.

Skills Checkpoint can help your valued employees by providing them with professional, individualised career planning and assessment.

This service can help them to identify their existing skills that could transition to other careers, and if appropriate, the training that might be needed to support that transition.  Each person gets a personalised career plan tailored to their circumstances and the labour market.

They also receive a professional resume service.

Skills and Training Incentive

Once your employee completes the Skills Checkpoint program, they may also be eligible to receive the Skills and Training Incentive which offers a co-fund amount of up to $2,200 for an eligible training course to help them transition to a new career.

Your employee can do any training that is identified as part of the Skills Checkpoint assessment and it can be accredited or non-accredited. The training must be linked to:

  • their current role (e.g. upgrading skills)
  • a future job opportunity, or
  • if re-skilling for a new industry it must be an industry or skill in demand as identified through the occupations in national shortage or an occupation with strong or moderate future demand on the National Skills Commission Skills Priority List.

The Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers Program and the Skills and Training Incentive are funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
